What are the different types of furring channel?

1. Hat Furring Channel

• Looks like a little "hat" in cross-section.

• Used for ceilings, walls, or over masonry to create a level surface for drywall.

• Common sizes: 7/8" deep or 1-1/2" deep.

• Can be mounted vertically or horizontally.

2. Z-Furring Channel

• Shaped like a "Z".

• Mainly used to attach insulation panels to concrete or block walls before drywall is installed.

• The offset design allows room for insulation between the furring and the wall.

3. Resilient Channel

• Special kind of furring channel designed to reduce sound transmission (soundproofing).

• Has a slightly flexible structure to "decouple" the drywall from the framing.

• Used a lot in apartments, hotels, or anywhere noise control is important.

4. Cold Rolled Channel ("CRC" or "C-Channel")

• Heavier and thicker than typical hat channels.

• Used for framing support — like top of walls, ceiling joists, or heavy furring systems.

• Often 1-1/2" deep with thicker steel (16-18 gauge).
